The C-series scoots should have been 800s!!!

Me too, the 650 is fine for a scooter. I've had the SW600, Burgman650 and now the BMW650GT. All had plenty of steam for a scooter platform. The GT does very will with a 400lb. load on the freeway and over the Siskyou pass as well as other steep hills in the area. When I want to get a more spirited ride I ride my K1100 which while not being a sport bike can do a good imitation of one. But for daily use especially in town and for errand, or during cold weather the GT is hard to beat. A larger engine means a larger fuel tank, heavier weight and poorer handling other than straight line riding. I think BMW got it pretty well balanced, decent fuel mileage, decent performance and handling. It'll beat a Harley Sportster 883 that I know for sure. Not bad for a scooter.

The More more more road winds up in places like this damn near unusable RGV500 Gamma Lambretta. But it makes for great pub conversation. We're already best in class, so it's not like we're stuck in the slow lane or wanting for creature comforts. My mates who have done iron butts and cross country cannonballs on GTS' all say the same, Stock is best for what they do, I tend to agree.

This is why, your 650 puts down more hp and torques than the sportster and doesn't have any shift lag...

One simplification BMW could have done would have been using a cog belt for the final drive instead of the oil bath chain. It would have improved the unsprung weight a bit and wouldn't have been as expensive as what we have.

Using chain drive is just being cautious in case you decide to install a Nitrous System!!

if you look at the narrow space you have in the single sided swing arm, I don't think you could get a decent belt in place that the chain can fit.

Are those things actually useable? I could sit on an Exocet missile but it doesn't do well in the corners. Since we're getting weird, I'll take a radial over a V8 any day.

But that isn't an automatic. BTW, I test rode a two-wheeled Boss Hoss and it was surprisingly entertaining to ride. Cornering clearance was nearly non-existant and it was waaay too easy to drag hard parts in turns but the steering was surprisingly light. The only thing that was surprising (and I don't even know why it should've surprised me) is the amount of torque reaction from that engine. It's best to thumb the starter with the bike on the sidestand; I swung it up to vertical before I hit the starter button and it felt like the bike wanted to throw me to the ground when the engine engaged!

Oh, that and the sudden realization on a hot summer day that your legs are resting on the engine heads...

Still, whacking the throttle open on the highway is an eye-opening experience I don't think any other two-wheeler can come close to replicating.
