Timing chain tensioner - going bad?

Hi all.

I've read this forum (and others) back to front, but can't find any video/audio of what the timing chain tensioner sounds like when it's beginning to fail.

Issue for me is I have 1700km on the clock of my 2015 C600, which should obviously have the new tensioner in it, but I've started developing a wierd, almost rhythmic rattling from the front right (which I understand is exactly where the tensioner is). It's somewhat audible at idle, but really noticeable at part throttle - I've the sound seems to bounce off the road or walls (in a tunnel for example). If I park the bike on its stand and crack the throttle a little, I can hear this sort of metal rattling that seems to be getting louder - but could just be my head.

I'm wondering if anyone has some audio or video available so that I can validate my concern?

Cheers

I am having vaguely similar issues to OP - just had the dealer look over it, test ride etc and was stung $100 for labour... to be told they could not replicate the sound.

Warranty is great, but I'd rather not turn my bike into an expensive paperweight in the process, y'know?

EDIT: Does anyone know where the part number is on the new chain tensioner? Apparently the new tensioner has the part number stamped on it, and I'd like to know if its visible without taking it off (which would require the pretensioning tool and probably give me a headache!)

Hey 2.....Just so ya know, while no one else commented on this part of your post, I couldn't help but laugh. Even though you may not have intended it to be funny. Funny it was..:D

Hope you get your rattling noise sorted out.

Looking at this site - http://www.ascycles.com/Illustrated_catalog2/MicroList.aspx?id=54688&catID=&catname=&bindName=Timing chain/Chain tensioner/Slide rail&bindCat=11_5072

The part number for the tensioner used up until 05/2014 is 11317729593 and goes for $54.69 USD. After that date part number is 11318544896 and it goes for $58.00 USD.

sorry toomuchvinyl - i know the part number, i mean where the number is physically located on the tensioner itself - i'm half tempted to buy one just to get a look at where the part number is. i'd prefer not to have to remove the current tensioner if i can verify the part number without taking it off.

The dealer should be able to tell whether you need the tensioner changed by the serial number. Of course, the new tensioners might have problems too, nothing is perfect. A couple of months ago, I put three control boards into a machine I was fixing before I got a good one. You never know !

I just had my tensioner replaced under recall warranty. The engine certainly sounds better. Now that I know what it was, I would describe the sound exactly as you have.

thought so! weirdly, i rode a demo C600 the other day with not even 50km on it, and it made the exact same noise, just not quite as loud. which makes me think the chain on these things is naturally quite audible.

how many miles/kms on your scoot, Gsheff?
