Stolen tft screen and anti theft brace

You might want to message @wspollack. Though I have not met him personally, we do shoot messages back and forth and he is an owner of a C400GT, one of the not too many of us who have stripped one down (I think twice in his case). I can assure you that he is a very thoughtful and experienced motorcyclist who may be able to assist if you have questions. I have no Idea what his availability might be but, if nothing else, you'll enjoy chatting with him!
I've had MOST of the front of the bodywork of TWO C 400 GTs off now, but I've never actually studied the mount of the TFT. Like you, I'm surprised that this is an item that is stolen off the scoots (at least in the UK, if I understand the situation correctly).

I agree. I just looked at it tonight and thought, how the hell are they getting these off! It seems like an awfull lot of work to remove the windshield, then the cover bracket, then unplug it, then it looks like there are several more screews to remove inside the head unit. And then what the hell would anyone use if for? It just seems like a really stupid thing to do unless you are reselling them. And yet there are several people in the UK saying someone has stollen theirs. Is there something I am missing?

I don't think this is much of a threat to me. My scooter is kept in the garage 90% of the time. If while riding I stop to eat it is usually close by and I can see it from a window or I am outside eating. The only time it sits over night is when I go on one of my trips to TN, AK, FL, and SD. And I don't think those are much of a threat.

Yeah, very weird, huh? Maybe the perps sell them to shady parts suppliers/resellers in Europe, or something. Max lists the TFT at USD 2,340.88 (https://shop.maxbmw.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=60292&rnd=09082020 ("INSTRUMENT CLUSTER / TFT DISPLAY" diagram), which is a significant chunk o' change (about 30% of the cost of a new bike!).

Me, on both of my GTs, I sprang for the protective plastic overlay from Wunderlich, so at least it won't get scratched. Ya know, so it won't get damaged if it gets stolen.

When I overnight somewhere -- and I haven't done this with a bike I own in a few years now, what with the pandemic, but I have a trip coming up later this month or next -- I generally ask hotels if I can park underneath their overhangs in front; that area has a lot of activity, is lit up, visible from the front desk, etc. Those are only one night, and the long stays (typically about four days) I make are when I visit my daughter in Asheville, NC, and the hotel I use, a nearby Sleep Inn (I have a lot of Choice Hotel points from these travels) always lets me do this.

And, with the upcoming trip in mind, I recently bought a lock for a front disc rotor for the GT (https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/oxford-boss-disc-lock?sku_id=954764 -- I had a bunch of ZillaCash burning a hole in my pocket, too). Of course, this won't lock up the TFT, but my main anti-theft system has always been the insurance I pay for, anyway, because nothing will really stop a team of guys just lifting a bike into a waiting van.

Holy #$%!!!!! They better come up with a solution because I'd steal one too at those prices should the need present.

For the record, that is pure hyperbole. I'm a retired cop and now lead an anti-fraud program for a Fortune 50; I don't even fudge the numbers on my taxes....I've been in many jails and prisons....not a good look for me.

Forgive my prying...what trip are you planning?

No prob: going to Asheville, solo, first overnight trip on a C 400 GT*. (I was planning on doing this last year, but, well, you know what happened early May 2023, with my '22 GT.)

I'm waiting for the weather to get in the 50s ... in the mornings ... and working around one or two minor potential commitment conflicts. I don't need much lead time when I go on these jaunts.

* (Need to add some GT pics to my collection at https://www.billanddot.com/Deals-Gap/ . And for the trip after that, maybe I'll take the Meteor, when it's a lot warmer.)

C400x owner. Just had my TFT dash screen stolen as well in London. Right out side my building were I live. Absolutely taking the piss. I use my bike for work so now have to chance riding around working without a speedometer. Getting a replacement through BMW dealership via my insurance company. Will have to sacrifice my NCB.

In case you haven't read this related thread ...

... a couple of us have now purchased the TFT anti-theft device from Cymarc. I have some pics of the installation in that thread.

On Friday, in central London, they stole the tft screen from my BMW C400x. I am now waiting for a replacement (and the cost coming with it….)

I was looking online for an anti theft brace, however most of them seem to be made for the larger motorbikes and, when I asked some of the manufacturers, they advised that it is not possible to fit it on my scooter….

Have any of you fitted such a brace on the c400x model?
Hi Dylan,

This is the best brace on the market https://www.cymarcbikeparts.co.uk/bmw-c400x-tft-screen-security-brace-1608-p.asp

I don't. My suggestion is to see if the TFT screen on the C400 you own is used on another BMW. If it is a part that BMW uses on another bike, and someone developed an antitheft device for the bike that shares the same screen (i.e. maybe teh F850GS), that device may work on the C400X or GT. YOu can ask your dealer if they know of another bike that uses the same display as the C400.

I bought the screen anti theft bracket from Cymark Engineering Ltd, a very well Engineered price of kit, also purchase the anti theft bolts x 2 and special tool bit to install the bracket. They are made in Wales UK, I think the cost to ship to the USA is 30 dollars well worth it considering the cost to replace and repair the wiring and screen

Well, it was about 30 GBP / about 40 USD. I have some screen grabs from my order a few months ago here:

After reading the horror stories, I plumped for the same set up. Theft of the actual bike is more likely here but just incase and all that.

Hi everybody, many thanks to Stefano with his help in getting me to focus on this problem. I’m very much afraid I don’t know very much about scooters (I’m a GS rider) however I have started to design security devices for the screens for scooters. The first one is for the CE-04. The next one will be for the c400GT. Please feel free to contact me if you have any advice - as I said I don’t know anything about scooters - but I’ll work as fast as I can to come up with solutions.

If you do contact me please use my email address [email protected]

I have a garage to park my CE04 in while at home, and the car park/parking lot where I work is in a very safe area; very low crime. Still, I know that I might travel to places which are not so safe, and this seems like a worthwhile investment for securing a vital component of my bike. So, I just purchased one!

Thank you CyMarc for creating these for our scooters. For those of you who own the C400GT, CyMarc makes these security brackets for you, also. Brilliant! I will post a review of mine once I receive and install it.

Yep, some of us C 400 GT are onboard with this. Been out for a while for the 400s. Here's a 400 thread on it, including my report after buying one:

I ordered one of these from CyMarc yesterday. It is cheap insurance and I just don't know about parking my bike overnight at hotels when I;'m on trips. I just rather be safe than sorry with the price of those screens.
